Advanced Learner Loans

Whether you are employed or unemployed and aged 19 or over and wish to gain a qualification at Level 3 or above to help you gain work or for independent study, the government is now providing a loan to meet the costs of your learning and assessment.  This loan only starts to be repayable when you earn £25,000 or more per annum.  So this is a great way to improve your skills and knowledge.  We currently offer loans to eligible learners and are currently offering L3 qualifications in

Whether you qualify for an Advanced Learner Loan depends on your:

  1. course

  2. college or training provider

  3. age

  4. nationality or residency status

You must be 19 or older on the first day of your course.

Your course must be:

  1. Level 3, 4, 5 or 6 qualification, eg A Levels or graduate certificate

  2. at an approved college or training provider in England

You must usually:

  1. be living in the UK on the first day of your course

  2. have been living in the UK, Channel Islands or Isle of Man for 3 years before starting your course

  3. be a UK national or have ‘settled status’ (this means there are no restrictions on how long you can stay)

You may also qualify if you’re:

  1. a UK national, or someone with settled status, but you live somewhere else in the European Economic Area (EEA)

  2. an EU national or a family member of one

  3. not a UK national but you’ve lived in the UK for at least 20 years (or at least half of your life)

  4. a refugee

  5. a migrant worker

  6. the child of a Swiss national

  7. the child of a Turkish worker


Loan Repayments

Repayments of your loan start the April following the completion of your course. You will pay back your loan (plus interest) when you finish your course and earn more than £25,000 a year. Your repayments will stop if your income drops below £25,000 a year.  Your annual repayment amount will be 9% of any income you earn over £25,000.


Your monthly repayments would be:

  • £15 a month - if you earned £27,000 a year

  • £37 a month - if you earned £30,000 a year
